Civil Engineering - Project Manager

Summit Engineering, Inc. is seeking a professionally licensed civil engineer with proven project management and leadership skills and a background in site development. Communication with clients and providing them with quality and creative design solutions are paramount to the success of our firm.

Project managers are responsible for design team leadership, internal project organization, preparing project proposals, design engineering, scheduling and budgeting, as well as business development and generating new work for the firm. This position is responsible for managing engineering tasks and projects which may include civil engineering specific or multi-discipline work. You will utilize your education, training and experience to make strategic engineering decisions, solve problems and direct engineering staff in the preparation of calculations, concept designs, construction drawings and technical specifications. Areas of design work include: sustainable site design, stormwater mitigation measures, grading, utility layout, pavement design, roadway geometry as well as hydraulic, hydrologic and earthwork calculations.

This experienced person will utilize their professional background to provide project management and design engineering on winery, custom residential, commercial, healthcare, water/wastewater treatment, bio-energy, and educational building type projects.

Qualifications/Skills:

  • B.S. Degree in Civil Engineering or equivalent.
  • California Professional Engineering License (P.E.), or in the process of obtaining.
  • QSD/QSP and LEED AP certifications preferred.
  • 5+ years engineering experience showing progressively increasing responsibility.
  • Two years minimum site development project management experience, including proposal preparation, project staffing, scheduling, monitoring scope and budgets, and construction document preparation.
  • Demonstrate technical expertise in at least one area where Summit performs a significant amount of work, such as site development, grading, drainage and utilities for one or more of Summit’s markets including industrial/winery, custom residential, municipal, commercial, and educational projects.

  • Experience using AutoCAD and Civil 3D. The candidate should be familiar with the capabilities and operations of Civil 3D for building surfaces, performing grading, laying out utilities, building corridors and cutting profiles and sections, and have the ability to direct designers in their utilization of these software applications.

Electrical Engineering - Project Engineer

Summit Engineering, Inc. is looking for a talented Project Engineer for our growing Electrical and Lighting Design Division. This individual will work with architects and commercial clients, and collaborate with Summit Engineering team members. You will be responsible for the design of electrical systems and lighting design for a variety of types of buildings, including wineries, custom residential, commercial, healthcare, municipal, and educational.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Coordinate and work with clients, architects, and other design discipline consultants to develop project electrical system requirements.
  • Perform electrical engineering calculations and designs using technical skills, experience and engineering judgment.
  • Review and interpret architectural and co-consultant drawings.  Coordinate specific electrical connection requirements for the various project disciplines' equipment and systems.
  • Develop electrical and lighting system construction drawings utilizing REVIT and/or AutoCAD and prepare related technical specifications.
  • Plan new electrical utility services for a facility, and coordinate with respective utility company representatives.
  • Work with vendors and manufacturers to obtain technical design information related to electrical and lighting products.
  • Perform construction phase work including review of equipment submittals, respond to RFIs, site visits and prepare field reports.
  • Prepare written correspondence, engineering reports, and other project documentation. This includes communicating with the project team, clients and contractors, in a clear, complete, and accurate manner.
  • Provide input to project team, regarding project status and schedule, on a regular basis.
  • Assist project managers with proposal preparation, including developing scope of services and task budgets.
  • Take responsibility for accuracy and completion of assigned tasks. Back check work, communicate questions, and seek out assistance from senior level staff when needed.
  • Assure that all engineering work is aligned with Summit technical standards and has been reviewed in accordance with Summit procedures.
  • Work on multiple projects/tasks at the same time.
  • Actively participate in ongoing learning, and engage in training opportunities and career development.

Planner

The Planner is an integral member of the project team responsible for assisting Project Managers and other staff with preparation, submittal and facilitation functions of various permits.

  • Prepares application packages for ministerial and discretionary permits such as use permits and building permits.
  • Prepares project descriptions, solicits proposals and collects reports and studies in support of applications.
  • Submits application packages and facilitates prompt review and approval from reviewing agency.
  • Maintains a submittal log, creates transmittals, and facilitates payment of permit fees and response to plan check comments.

TYPICAL RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE:

  • Prepare and maintain permitting schedule as directed by the Project Manager; inform team of upcoming milestones and scheduled deadlines to facilitate project progress. 
  • Work with various governmental agencies to identify permitting procedures, requirements and time lines and communicate applicable standards and procedures to the internal and/or external team.
  • Prepare project descriptions, solicit proposals, collect reports and studies in support of applications.
  • Work with various governmental agencies to facilitate plan review and county inspections.
  • Assist internal and/or external team members with interpretation of applicable codes, regulations, and standards as directed by the Division Manager.
  • Provide technical advice on planning, zoning and land use matters as directed by the Division Manager.

DESIRED REQUIREMENTS:

  • Exhibits an understanding of the California Environmental Quality Act as it relates to discretionary permits.
  • Understands code requirements and the ability to interpret their applicability.
  • Basic understanding of project design workflow, Summit and other consultants’ roles on typical projects, government agencies’ roles on projects, and construction technologies.
  • Ability to read and understand mapping and facility construction drawings to identify information relevant to the project.
  • Two to five years’ experience, including internships.
  • Degree in planning and/or related field preferred.

Structural Engineering - Project Engineer

The Job
As a Project Engineer in our Structural Division, you will be responsible for executing engineering and design tasks with a high degree of independence, and collaborating with staff engineers as needed to complete their work. Engineers in this position develop construction documents, calculations, specifications, and technical engineering reports. 

The job requires an emphasis in low rise, high complexity buildings that involve common construction material such as steel, concrete, wood, and masonry, and uncommon materials such as aluminum, rammed earth, and stainless steel. Design and drafting using AutoCAD and Revit will be a responsibility of this position.

The selected applicant will gain experience in permitting within the North Coast and beyond.  They will also have opportunities to take on increasing responsibility and independence commensurate with their abilities and initiative. 

The Requirements

  • B.S. Degree in Civil Engineering or Architectural Engineering with an emphasis in Structural.
  • CA Professional Engineering license (P.E.), or in the process of obtaining.
  • 3 to 5 years of experience showing successively increasing responsibility.
  • Experience in the design of wood-framed, concrete and steel-framed structures, including commercial and high-end residential projects

This position involves performing engineering calculations and design using technical skills, experience and engineering judgment to transform concept designs into Construction Drawings and Technical Specifications. You will prepare plans and details in AutoCAD or Revit for incorporation into the Construction Drawings and Technical Specifications. You will perform analysis using computer software and verify with supporting calculations. You will also work collaboratively on projects with your colleagues as part of a multi-disciplinary team.

Job Requirements

  • Beginning to intermediate skill with REVIT software.
  • B.S. Degree in Civil Engineering or Architectural Engineering with an emphasis in Structural and E.I.T. Certification highly preferred.
  • Experience with wood design desired.
  • Ability and drive to pursue and obtain a California P.E. license.
  • Competency in working with at least one other structural software program such as RAM, STAAD, ETAB, or RISA.
  • Ability to prepare AutoCAD structural plans and details with minimal supervision.
  • Experience on a construction site, either through internship or work experience, highly preferred.
  • One to three years of experience in a similar role highly preferred.

Water/Wastewater Engineering - Project Manager

THE POSITION:

Planner

The Planner is an integral member of the project team responsible for assisting Project Managers and other staff with preparation, submittal and facilitation functions of various permits.

  • Prepares application packages for ministerial and discretionary permits such as use permits and building permits.
  • Prepares project descriptions, solicits proposals and collects reports and studies in support of applications.
  • Submits application packages and facilitates prompt review and approval from reviewing agency.
  • Maintains a submittal log, creates transmittals, and facilitates payment of permit fees and response to plan check comments.

TYPICAL RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE:

  • Prepare and maintain permitting schedule as directed by the Project Manager; inform team of upcoming milestones and scheduled deadlines to facilitate project progress. 
  • Work with various governmental agencies to identify permitting procedures, requirements and time lines and communicate applicable standards and procedures to the internal and/or external team.
  • Prepare project descriptions, solicit proposals, collect reports and studies in support of applications.
  • Work with various governmental agencies to facilitate plan review and county inspections.
  • Assist internal and/or external team members with interpretation of applicable codes, regulations, and standards as directed by the Division Manager.
  • Provide technical advice on planning, zoning and land use matters as directed by the Division Manager.

DESIRED REQUIREMENTS:

  • Exhibits an understanding of the California Environmental Quality Act as it relates to discretionary permits.
  • Understands code requirements and the ability to interpret their applicability.
  • Basic understanding of project design workflow, Summit and other consultants’ roles on typical projects, government agencies’ roles on projects, and construction technologies.
  • Ability to read and understand mapping and facility construction drawings to identify information relevant to the project.
  • Two to five years’ experience, including internships.
  • Degree in planning and/or related field preferred.

Must also have a valid driver’s license, and be eligible to work in the US without sponsorship.

The Job
As a Project Engineer in our Structural Division, you will be responsible for executing engineering and design tasks with a high degree of independence, and collaborating with staff engineers as needed to complete their work. Engineers in this position develop construction documents, calculations, specifications, and technical engineering reports. 

The job requires an emphasis in low rise, high complexity buildings that involve common construction material such as steel, concrete, wood, and masonry, and uncommon materials such as aluminum, rammed earth, and stainless steel. Design and drafting using AutoCAD and Revit will be a responsibility of this position.

The selected applicant will gain experience in permitting within the North Coast and beyond.  They will also have opportunities to take on increasing responsibility and independence commensurate with their abilities and initiative. 

The Requirements

  • B.S. Degree in Civil Engineering or Architectural Engineering with an emphasis in Structural.
  • CA Professional Engineering license (P.E.), or in the process of obtaining.
  • 3 to 5 years of experience showing successively increasing responsibility.
  • Experience in the design of wood-framed, concrete and steel-framed structures, including commercial and high-end residential projects
  • Experience using AutoCAD and/or Revit. 
  • Ability to work on several projects concurrently.
  • Ability to focus on the details of a project while understanding the big picture from the project team perspective.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.

The Job
This position involves performing engineering calculations and design using technical skills, experience and engineering judgment to transform concept designs into Construction Drawings and Technical Specifications. You will prepare plans and details in AutoCAD or Revit for incorporation into the Construction Drawings and Technical Specifications. You will perform analysis using computer software and verify with supporting calculations. You will also work collaboratively on projects with your colleagues as part of a multi-disciplinary team.

Job Requirements

  • Beginning to intermediate skill with REVIT software.
  • B.S. Degree in Civil Engineering or Architectural Engineering with an emphasis in Structural and E.I.T. Certification highly preferred.
  • Experience with wood design desired.
  • Ability and drive to pursue and obtain a California P.E. license.
  • Competency in working with at least one other structural software program such as RAM, STAAD, ETAB, or RISA.
  • Ability to prepare AutoCAD structural plans and details with minimal supervision.
  • Experience on a construction site, either through internship or work experience, highly preferred.
  • One to three years of experience in a similar role highly preferred.
  • Ability to resolve issues and complete work per deadlines efficiently.
  • Ability to work well on a project team.

THE POSITION:

As a Project Manager in Summit Engineering's Water/Wastewater Division, you will be responsible for team leadership and internal project organization, including preparing project proposals, scheduling and budgeting. You will continue building relationships with clients, and help generate new work for the firm.

DESIRED EXPERIENCE AND QUALIFICATIONS:

  • 5 to 10 years of wastewater design engineering experience showing successively increased responsibility.
  • Successful experience managing others and leading an engineering design team through all phases ofproject design.
  • Strong wastewater engineering design experience, including:
    • Thorough understanding of water/wastewater treatment processes including biological treatment.
    • Equipment design experience including pumps, blowers, compressors, aeration equipment, boilers/hot water heaters, HVAC systems, and heat exchangers.
    • Experience with above-grade piping design.
    • Ability to perform heating and cooling requirements calculations for wastewater treatment processes is ideal.
  • B.S. or M.S. Degree in Civil, Environmental, or Chemical Engineering.
  • P.E. Certification a plus.
  • Must have a valid driver's license and be eligible to work in the U.S..
