We Rise

Culture

Culture

Culture is cool. We have open areas for collaborating, and communication is easy. Some of the things we think are special about Summit include:

Activities

We like the people we work with and enjoy spending time together. We keep active with a variety of activities:

  • Monthly "Wine Downs" where we all gather in the conference room to enjoy wine, beer, soda and food.  Management gives an update on the business and a staff member gives a mini-presentation on something they are passionate about. Topics have included mountain biking, making the switch to "light" backpacking, worldwide travel, surfing, knitting, Burning Man, and really amazing work projects. It's a great way to get to know each other on a more personal level.
  • Every year employees plan a weekend trip.  Trips have included camping at nearby Sugarloaf Ridge as well as a kayaking day trip to Tomales Bay where we have an oyster BBQ for the kayakers and those choosing to stay on the beach. We also have in-house events like "Office Olympics" and  Division Challenges, ping-pong and volley ball, and have organized team building activities like a Wine and Paint night.
  • "The Slide Rules" is the name of our co-ed softball team. We compete against other firms and wineries in the area. It's great fun, and we're pretty good!
  • Employees often get together after work or on weekends to socialize, cycle, mountain bike, jog or hike.
  • Last year, close to a third of our employees participated in Bike to Work Day. We anticipate another strong showing this year!
  • Every summer we have a big family picnic, and each winter we have a end of the year holiday party for employees and their guests. Both events are top-notch.

Giving Back

Summit believes in giving back:

  • Giving back to the local community in various ways is important to Summit. Last year, we volunteered at the local Redwood Empire Food Bank where we sorted carrots and apples for distribution.
  • Our employees particiated in a winter clothing and supplies drive to suppor the Sonoma County Task Force for the Homeless "One Warm Coat" project.
  • We provided financial assistance to help communities in Lake County rebuild after the devastating forest fires.
  • Summit sponsored the Mike Hauser Algebra Academy which provides middle school students with the opportunity to visit STEM related employers and learn the possibilities of future careers.
  • Summit is also a corporate sponsor of the local Engineers Without Borders (EWB) Sonoma County Professional chapter.  The last three EWB-SCP presidents have been Summit employees, and a number of our employees have traveled to the Peruvian Amazon to install rainwater catchment systems for villages that did not have access to clean water.

Professional Development

  • Summit encourages and supports ongoing professional development by providing employees with appropriate seminars, workshops, and other training opportunities. We assist employees in accruing the experience, skills, and knowledge to obtain their California PE or SE license, and once passed, have a reimbursement program.
  • Our engineers work on multiple projects at a time, so are continually exposed to the various engineering disciplines, different mentors, and a diverse assortment of challenges.

Special Perks

  • Breakfast is served on the last day of the week, every week.
  • Kitchen is ALWAYS stocked with cereal, yogurt, bread, PB, and other items. Chocolate, nuts, granola bars, etc. are also available.
  • On Wednesdays, we put out "healthy snacks" after lunch to keep energy levels high.
  • We started a grass roots "Health and Wellness" committee this year that has monthly "walk and talk" meetings. some of the activities planned have included a "Step Challenge" to encourage walking, bicycle safefty lunch and learn, and a family camping trip.
  • The Airport Health Club (ranked #1 in Santa Rosa) is a few blocks from the office. Summit pays the one time membership fee for employees, and then typically rebates back 50% of what employees pay annually in monthly dues.
  • We know that great employees know other great potential employees, so we have a referral bonus program in place to encourage that.
  • We are on a 9/80 schedule. That means we work 9 hour days (instead of 8), and are off every other Friday. The office is actually closed on that Friday. It's great for scheduling appointments, going away for long weekends, or just getting an early start to the weekend.
  • Summit Engineering, Inc. has been selected as one of the North Bay's Best Places to Work 10 times. Our employees work hard, and take tremendous pride in their work. Sonoma County is a beautiful place to live - and work. We're in the middle of wine country, surrounded by redwoods, and close to the ocean. Especially for people who like to spend time out of doors, it's hard to beat.

We're Green!

Summit is proud to be a member of the California Green Business Network in Sonoma County. We incorporate sustainability into our core business operations through internal and external efforts.  Specifically, we:

  • Reduce, reuse and recycle
  • Purchase environmentally preferable products
  • Conserve energy, water and natural resources
  • Educate employees on resource conservation and pollution prevention
  • Participate in the Spare the Air campaign
